"We had moved to Barnstaple (August 2009) having brought a house on the Whiddon Estate. The fireplace however was a bit of an eye sore and we wanted to change it.

The fire was a real one that burnt coal but due to our three year old grandson being with us a great deal we felt that this would be too messy and too dangerous to run. There was also a sealed off gas pipe sticking up six-inches above the carpet alongside the fireplace that needed to be cut back to floor level. We could have selected a gas fire but we decided against having one and besides the room was heated by two radiators, so it was unlikely that we would ever use it. Which meant that it would be off all the time. We decided therefore to have an electric fire like we had in our old house purely for cosmetic effect, and of course a decent surround to with it."

"They removed the fireplace as scheduled, and closed off the chimney but drilled a core vent through the wall. They sealed of the gas pipe that was sticking up from the floor, levelling it to floor level but still accessible if required. This enabled us to have the walls of the room plaster skimmed and when they returned, it only took them a morning to fit the Winston Suite and the Flameriko Berkley 2 Brass electic fire that we had chosen . Then they fitted the new skirting ready for us to paint. Brilliant work!"
